On the occasion of ‘Family Days’, the House of European History invites you to take part in a host of activities! Come and travel through time in our special photo studio or take part in 3D and augmented reality workshops to make amazing creations yourself. Or have a last dance to the tune of your old LP. Bring your newly created accessories along to the 1960s closing party!
Create your own 3D object! (on the fourth floor in front of the big showcase)
Workshop activity from 13.00 to 14.30 (in English)
Workshop activity from 15.00 to 16.30 (in Dutch)
Use special 3D pens that allow you to make your own object. Instead of using ink, these ‘magic pens’ allows you to design your own jewellery, wallets or accessories for your clothes, to name but a few examples. Be creative, produce something unique and bring it along to the party later! You can, of course, also take inspiration from the museum’s exhibition and recreate an object you really like.
Augmented reality in the museum (Restless Youth exhibition)
Workshop activity from 13.00 to 14.30 (in Dutch)
Workshop activity from 15.30 to 17.00 (in English)
After a brief introduction to augmented reality you will be divided into small groups and use a special app on the iPad. Each group will work on their own assignment to create an ‘exhibition within the exhibition’. You can use text, pictures and videos. For example, a physical picture can be transformed into a video in augmented reality. Alternatively, you can let a poster in the exhibition come to life and make it really sing!
Recycle art: make your own hats and caps from empty drinks packaging
Drop in activity from 12.30 to 16.00 (EN / NL / FR)
A good, strong hat not only protects you against the sun and rain, but can also be worn long after your day at the museum. Made from collected Tetrapack drinks containers, the hats are made to measure on the spot, so that everyone can see how it is done. They look great and are comfortable to wear. An old craft is applied in a new way to give surprising and lasting results!
Back to the 20th century party with Kidsgazette Photo studio & DJ (EN / NL / FR)
Were your (grand)parents rebels? Did they stage mass street protests, just like you in your fight to save the planet? What kind of radicals were they? Why did they want to change the world? Were they ‘Peace and Love’ hippies or ‘No Future’ punks? Put yourself in their shoes and create your own badges, accessories and crazy costumes inspired by your (grand)parents’ era. Bring them with you on 17th November 2019 from 2pm to 5pm and travel back in time!
Family Discovery Spaces
For families with 6-10 year-olds – take a backpack and ‘time-travel’ through different periods of Europe’s past! Kids will be able to smell, feel and experience history as never before, through role-play games in a 1960s Travel Agency, stepping into the shoes of an astronaut or interacting with robots. Family Spaces are available in 24 languages, and additional learning activities with a host will take place between 10.30 to 11.30 and 14.00 to 17.00. Free entry. No reservation required.
Play snakes and ladders – European history game on a giant board
All day on the sixth floor
Snakes and Ladders is a classic board game for two or more players, known and loved all over the world, and involves numbered squares in a grid. ‘Ladders’ and ‘snakes’ are printed on the board, each connecting two specific squares. Roll the dice and try to be the first to get to the top!
