About IWalk
The IWalk program is a USC Shoah Foundation educational initiative. The IWalk digital learning app connects users and historical sites through text, documents, images and survivor and witness video testimonies from the USC Shoah Foundation's Visual History Archive. It triangulates the space, stories, and the pedagogical context via the use of locally relevant testimony clips. In these clips, interviewees speak about and reflect upon the specific locations or themes in question. Learning occurs on location, although a virtual version of the IWalk program is also available via the IWitness platform. IWalk development is mentored by Zachor Foundation from Social Remembrance in Hungary, from where the concept of the program started.
These learning modules complement and enrich the understanding of physical locations, concepts, or topics, which connects users to the history around them. A key pedagogical approach is inquiry-based learning, which encourages students to deeply investigate and interrogate the sites and makes the learning relevant to their lives. Testimony clips and other resources play a pivotal role in supporting this active learning.
IWalk already exist in 15 countries — Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland, The Netherlands, United- States and Ukraine — with Belgium being number 16.
What is IWalk Brussels?
In this first ever IWalk in Belgium, visitors will be guided through locations in Brussels using the mobile app, retracing the lives of children who survived the Holocaust — Michel, Sonia, Helene and Gilbert. Their families originated from Poland, Hungary and Romania, and were living in the Marolles and Brussels centre areas during the pre-war and occupation periods.
The tour features testimonial video clips, historical images and biographical texts, combined with the real-world plaques, doors and buildings of today, allowing participants to follow the children’s harrowing journeys.
IWalk Brussels has been developed by the House of European History learning team in collaboration with the USC Shoah Foundation’s and Zachor Foundation’s team of educators.
IWalk Brussels will be available for visitors and schools on the app as a permanent offer. After the IWalk, visitors can choose to either visit the Jewish Museum in the city centre to learn more about the local Jewish history of Brussels, or visit the House of European History, and dive into this topic even further via a dedicated tablet tour to learn about the Shoah in a transnational way.
