On 16 January 2019, 50 years have passed since the self-sacrifice of the Czech student Jan Palach who self-immolated himself in a protest against the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Armies of the Warsaw Pact.

During the months following the invasion in August 1968, a range of means to suppress freedom of society and individuals were introduced, including censorship and oppression of those who did not approve of the occupation, as bans to study or to work in prestigious fields.

The human torch of Jan Palach, an extremely courageous act, raised broad international attention and esteem, while the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia continued to belittle Palach’s deed by spreading fake news about painless cold fire and Palach’s weak mental health.

The biographical movie by the renowned Czech director Robert Sedláček brings forward a very intimate perspective of Jan Palach – a key representative of the student generation of 1960s, albeit in a dramatically different context than his peers behind the Iron Curtain.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the director, Mr Robert Sedláček.
